Demon Food Pantry

New food order forms are now available for the Demon Food Pantry.  Forms were sent home on Friday, June 17 with students who attend Exploration Academy and/or the Alley Program.  If you would like to pick up a form, they are available through the summer food program (breakfast and lunch) in the school cafeteria as well through the central office.  Completed forms should be returned to either of these locations by Wednesday, June 22 and will be ready for pickup on Friday, June 24.  In addition, the attached form may . . .

6th Grade Attends JA BizTown

This year the 6th grade students at Lamoni Middle School participated in a Junior Achievement program called JA BizTown.  This is a  multi-curricular unit that teaches skills in community and economics, financial literacy, business management, and job skills.  The students work on preparation for several weeks.  On May 12 they traveled to Des Moines to work with students from Martensdale-St. Mary's school within several businesses at BizTown, which is a simulation city.  Everyone had a wonderful time . . .

6th Grade Meets Their Penpals

This year the Lamoni Middle School 6th grade students had RSVP penpals.  We exchanged letters several times throughout the year and very much enjoyed doing this. On Tuesday, May 24, the 6th graders and their adult penpals got together in the Commons area and had an end-of-year celebration.  Everyone had a great time getting to know each other better, and we enjoyed donuts, juice, and playing games and visiting together. Thank you, RSVP volunteers, for being our penpals!

Lamoni School's Food Pantry

The Lamoni School Food Pantry will be continuing to fill the needs of our school families this summer.  Our first order form (June1) can be picked up in the cafeteria during breakfast or school lunch times this week, or feel free to print and complete the order form below.  All completed forms should be delivered back to the school cafeteria for pick up.  Our first order will be filled and ready to be picked up in the Commons area of the high school from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 11. Service Learning Students Fix Rings

The spring semester Service Learning Class just finished fixing the rings in Central Park. Prior to their work, the rings were unsafe because a few of the posts had rotted out at ground level. For the project, students used grant funding from Americorps and Lamoni Parks and Recreation as well as lumber from the city. Mrs. Farnham and Elementary Tag Students Demonstrate Robot Battle for Preschool

Elementary tag students demonstrated their robots each individually, and then battled them for Ms. Shyra’s preschool class.  The preschool students were excited to see each battle and were cheering for students and robots to win.  Mrs. Farnham also talked with preschoolers about why robots were stuck, or what was happening during the battles.  Preschool students asked questions about how they made the robots and how they worked. Last Thursday, May 12, the HS Boys and Girls track teams participated in the district track meet in Corydon.  On Saturday, the official results were released and collectively the HS track teams are sending five members to state!  Javin Stevenson will be participating in the 200 meter dash.  He will also be participating in the distance medley with Kalvin Brown, Brayden Olson, and Tyson McDole.  Brayden Olson will be representing Lamoni in the discus as well and Tyson McDole will be racing in the 1600 meter.  For . . .

FFA BBQ and Petting Zoo

On Tuesday, the Lamoni FFA Chapter held their annual BBQ and petting zoo. The FFA members brought in a myriad of animals for people to interact with. Students, Pre-K through 12, staff, and community members had a great time seeing the animals and getting some lunch. Lamoni Seniors Compete in their Last Demon Relays

Last night Lamoni competed in the Demon Relays. The boys took home 1st place with 160 points. Many of the athletes, both girls and boys, accomplished new personal records. All in all, the kids did a great job and represented the school and themselves very well. It was also senior night for Lamoni. This is the last year that Malori, Jack, Matthew, Odin, Brayden, and Javin will compete in high school track. They have accomplished many things while competing for Lamoni and always displayed great Demon PRIDE! Great job guys!  . . .

Meal Assistance Program 2022-23

Dear Parents/Guardians, In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the USDA provided free meals to all school children the past two years. This program will stop at the end of the 2021-22 school year.  In order to receive meal assistance for the 2022-23 school year, a new Iowa Eligibility Free and Reduced Application will need to be filled to see if you qualify. A new application must be completed each year.  . . .

Last week, the elementary held their April Demon PRIDE Assembly. At the event, students were selected by their teachers and awarded a Demon PRIDE Student of the Month certificate. Boys and Girls Track Teams Win Conference Meet

Last night, both the Boys and Girls Track and Field Teams competed in the Bluegrass Conference Meet and won. The Lamoni girls took first in the Bluegrass Conference meet scoring 105 points.  The top four scoring teams were rounded out by Murray (103), Seymour (100) and Mormon Trail (96). All girls scored points to achieve the victory showing a total team effort. Cameron Wins Governor Scholar Award

Each year, Governor Kim Reynolds and title sponsor Iowa Farm Bureau honor one or two top academic achieving seniors from each school in the state of Iowa. On May 1st, Governor Reynolds honored Cameron Martin with the award. There were 419 students who were honored with the prestigious award this year. Cameron was selected by her teachers to receive the award and was able to bring along her parents and one of her favorite teachers, Mrs. Ramaeker, to the ceremony. Great job Cameron! Kindergarten is Raising Chickens

Mrs. Mickelson's Kindergarten class is raising chickens. Roughly 26 days ago, she brought in eggs and the class began incubating them. They incubated for 21 days until they started hatching last Thursday. Of the original seven eggs, four hatched and are doing well; two Bantams and two Silver Laced Wyandottes. On the 28th the Lamoni Girls Track Team competed in the Osceola and Murray Invitational. While they did not win the meet, they competed hard and had a great showing. GU Ag Business Visits Elementary

The Graceland University Agricultural Business Club and Lamoni FFA members started a special project with all of our elementary students yesterday during recess time. The students learned all about agriculture and the anatomy of plants. Each child was able to plant their very own marigold flower! The flowers will be kept at school and will be sent home with students to give to their families once they bloom!

4th Grade Holds Marketplace

4th Grade completed their economics unit by holding a Marketplace. Students practiced being producers by creating products at home that they had to make out of a type of paper. At school, the students wrote commercial scripts, product descriptions, and set their prices based on the amount of interest in their product. Today, student got to practice being the consumers by setting their budgets and shopping at each other's shops. We even got to have 1st grade come down and shop for products too! Chad Elliott Visits LCSD

Lamoni Elementary students had the privilege of meeting with local author, poet, musician and artist, Chad Elliott on March 22. Chad is the father of two of our own students and has travelled extensively sharing his love of music and art with school children. On March 12, 2022, Individual speech students competed at the state contest at ADM High School. Admira Katzmann received a II rating in the Acting category. Lily Meline received a I rating in the Reviewing category, and Heiatua Paredes received a I rating in both her Poetry and Acting categories.  Furthermore, Heiatua was selected to perform at the All State Individual Speech Contest at UNI in Cedar Falls on March 28. First grade celebrated Read Across America on Wednesday, March 2nd to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday. We had nine different staff members come in and share their favorite stories with us. Demons Compete in District Individual Speech Contest

Lamoni participated in the District Individual Speech contest at Shenandoah High School today. Lily Meline received a I rating in the Reviewing category. Heiatua Paredes received I ratings in both Poetry and Acting. And Admira Katzmann received a I rating in Acting and a II rating in Poetry. Congratulations Michael!

Congratulations to Michael Millslagle (LHS class of 2020) on wining the high jump event at the Heart of American NAIA indoor track meet held in Maryville, MO on 2/19/22.  Michael represented Graceland University with a winning jump of 7ft 1/2 inch making him a two time HAAC Conference Champion and now 2nd in the nation in the high jump event.  His weekend jump also placed him 134th in the world in the high jump event.  Lamoni Community School is very proud to say that Michael is one of ours!  If you see this . . .

Projects Funded

On January 17th, Mrs. Roberts came into Mr. Silver's 6th and 9th grade classes for Martin Luther King Day. MLK Day is designated as a national day of service and as such, Mrs. Roberts, through Americorps, came in and taught about the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The students were also asked to fill out a sheet detailing a community project they would like to do or see completed. 7th Grade Shares Projects

Mrs. Carpenter's 7th grade science class is currently studying magnetic and electrical forces. During the course of their studies, they created projects that displayed magnetic force, electrical force, or both together. The class then invited students from other classes and age group to come in and view their projects. Speech Team Receives High Marks

The Lamoni large group speech team performed at district contest on January 22nd at Clarke High School. Both Reader's Theater and Group Improv received I (excellent) ratings. They advanced to the state contest and performed at West Des Moines Valley on February 5th. Both groups received II (good) ratings.  Individual speech will perform at Shenandoah High School on February 26th.

January 20 was an exciting day for Lamoni Elementary students who got to meet a real Iowa author!!! Coach Sloth came to the library and told us about how exciting it is to write books.  There were lots of ooohs and aaahs as Coach performed a magic trick using his newest book “Coach Sloth’s Magic Coloring book. Some of the students even had the chance to be actors as he retold the story of Hank the Bully! In the afternoon, every child got to choose one of Coach Sloth’s books to keep. Sixth Grade Students Support Food Pantry

Congress has designated Martin Luther King Day as a day of service. In keeping with those wishes, on MLK Day, Mrs. Roberts came into our sixth grade social studies and Leadership classes to talk about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, his legacy, and service to each other. JV and Varsity Win

Congratulations to the girls' JV and varsity basketball teams as both defeated North Harrison last night. The JV team won 18-6 in two quarters of play and the varsity won 53-31. Reese Potter led the team in scoring with 22 points followed by Taylor Henson with 15. Reese also led in rebounds with 14 followed by Cameron Martin who had 8. The Demons are currently 12-2. They and the boys' team both play tonight at Moulton-Udell with the girls' game starting at 6:00 PM and the boys' starting at 7:30 PM. Go Demons!

Pre-School Catapults

Last week, Ms. Shyra’s preschool class worked together make catapults.  After talking about forces and properties of matter, we built a catapult as a large group, and tried to catapult many objects with different properties.  Then we broke into small groups and used magnatiles and rulers to make catapults for cotton balls.   The students were excited to do this, and asked for materials to be left out for them to use again during free play time.

4th Grade Chain Reactions

Last Monday and Tuesday Mrs. Burke's 4th grade class studied chain reactions. They started by looking at cause and effect with simple one-step reactions. They increased the steps until they watched and understood Rube Goldberg Machines. They were then tasked with creating a minimum two-step reaction to accomplish a task. Cookie Creations

Today Mrs. Martin's preschool class decorated cookies with Mr. Hampton's foods class. The high school students baked the cookies prior and then helped the preschoolers decorate them. Both classes had a great time doing it. It's great to see the bigs help out the littles and vice versa. The preschool also went for a walk.

     Our fourth grade class learned about murals and different kinds of art. On December 2, 2021, we went on a mural walk to see art murals on main street.  First we went downtown and saw our first mural.  It was made in 1990 by Lamoni High School and Middle School students. It had a farm and a corn field.  Mrs. Pitt, our literacy teacher, explained a little about it.  Then we went down to the coffee shop and saw a beautiful illusion mural. Lt. Governor Visits

On Monday, November 22, Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg and the CEO of the Food Bank of Iowa, Michelle Book, visited our school to see our food pantry and find out more about its operation.  The Food Bank of Iowa donates the food we receive in our pantry, and they have also provided a brand new freezer this year through grant funding.  Both Gregg and Book were very impressed with our operation as well as the number of families we have been able to serve so far this year.  We are all very thankful for our food . . .

They are an improv group that is part of the Iowa Insurance Division that uses sketch comedy to teach about saving, investing, credit, and a variety of other finance related topics. Today Decatur County Naturalist Kayla Clausen, visited preschool to teach about turkeys. She read them a story, told them the difference between poults, hens, and toms, and passed around different displays so the kids could feel turkey feathers, beards, and spurs. Thanks for all the Books!

We at Lamoni Community School District would like to thank the Optimist Club, the Parent-Teacher Organization, BTC Bank, and the Lions Club for donating to the book fair this year. Due to their generosity, each student, Pre-K to Fifth Grade, was able to get a free book of their choosing from the Usborne Books and More Book Fair this year. Last week Mrs. Patience and her dutiful son Mark put the middle school's first quarter art on display in the main hallway of the middle school. Last quarter the eighth grade worked on cut paper/tempera paint silhouettes, graphite and colored pencil grisaille drawings, ink and watercolor marker jigsaw designs, and decorative masks. Service Learning Class Rebuilds Benches

As the first quarter came to a close, Mr. Silver's freshman Service Learning Class was able to finish rebuilding the two shelter benches in Central Park. Students in the class identified their rebuilding as a need for the community and were tasked with finding out a way to make that happen. Pumpkin Book Reports

In the last two weeks the 1st graders brought pumpkins into Mrs. McKillip's classroom for an assignment. The students were tasked with picking one of their favorite books, reading it, and then writing a report on it to share with their peers. They also decorated a pumpkin to resemble one of the characters from their book. As a result Mrs. McKillip's classroom is adorned with some wonderfully creative pumpkins. Great job 1st Grade! 4th Grade Weathering and Erosion

4th Grade started their Weathering and Erosion unit this week. Today they learned that there are different types of weathering and that we can find a lot of examples of root or ice wedging by just walking around in town. They also completed a Sugar Shake experiment to find out what happens to the big jagged rocks that fall down mountains. Their favorite part was definitely the sugar cubes and the shaking. Some were so good at shaking that we also learned a bonus lesson about powdered sugar!

Alumni vs Players Flag Football Game

This Friday since the Homecoming Game has been cancelled, the High School Student Council decided to throw an Alumni vs. Players flag football game. All alumni football players are invited to participate and alumni cheerleaders are invited to cheer for the teams if they would like. The game will have four ten minute quarters with a ten minute halftime during which the queen will be crowned. The game starts at 7:00 PM at Graceland University and all community members are welcome to attend. Go Demons!

RCH/ Donates Hand Sanitizer

In an effort to support good hygiene and limit the spread of COVID, the Mount Ayr Medical Clinic and Ringgold County Hospital are donating more than 180 cases of hand sanitizer to area schools. "Through the course of this pandemic, we've all be reminded of the importance of keeping our hands sanitized," said Joe Mangiameli, hospital CEO. Congratulations to the High School and Middle School Volleyball Teams on their wins last night. Both teams beat Diagonal and the varsity squad is currently ranked 14th in the state. Demons Run at Leon C.C. Meet

Last night the Lamoni Cross Country Team ran at the Leon C.C. Meet. The boys did well with two of them beating their previos times and one running for the first time. The results were as follows: Tyson McDole- 17:33 3rd place (medalist) Jack Greenwood- 20:31 24th place Matthew Patience- 20:51 26th place Hosah Niebauer- 31:37 67th place (1st time runner) Great job Demons! Demons Win the Clarke Kickoff Classic

The Lamoni Demons won the Clarke Kickoff Classic volleyball tournament last Saturday. In pool play they beat Chariton in three, Saydel in two, and  Martensdale-St. Marys in two. In the final two games to determine the winner, they beat East Union in two and Chariton in two for the championship. Awesome job and keep up the great work! Their next game will be at home Tuesday at 5:30 against Wayne.

     Lamoni Community Schools will light up the baseball and softball fields Friday, May 1st starting at 8 pm. The lights will remain on for 1 minute for each day our school district has been out of school for the COVID-19 shutdown. Lamoni 6 th graders recently had a bake sale to raise money for Toys for Tots.  We sold baked goods at Middle School Fun Night and again on December 16 during the middle school basketball games.  We had a great day of shopping at Dollar General for toys to be donated to Decatur County Toys for Tots.  Thank you to everyone who supported our efforts through baking, buying, donating, and helping!

Students to Learn Stop-Motion Animation from LCSD Alumnus

Welcome back! We hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. The Wellness Committee is promoting a Healthy Wall of Fame. The Lamoni Community Schools nominated Gayle Ramaeker the healthiest teacher. The Lamoni Bowling squad traveled to Osceola, Iowa, on Monday to take on several surrounding teams.  The Demons didn't fare well against the competition but scored a team score of 1832, which is about 200 pins above their average.  Even though the team didn’t fare well in scoring, they feel that they are making improvements.   On Tuesday, the bowling team traveled to Red Oak in another multi-team match.  The Demons were short-staffed and could not compete as a team but they had two individuals compete. . . .

    Welcome back! We hope the students had a fun filled and/or relaxing winter break! Dan Boswell Retires After 21 Years

    At 7:45 a.m. on December 22, 2016 the keys were passed on from Dan Boswell to Bob Kelly, the new Lamoni Community School District Maintenance and Grounds Supervisor. At around 2:30 p.m., with his hours in for the week, Dan quietly clocked out for the last time, discreetly leaving on his last day before retirement. Welcome back to another exciting week in the Lamoni High School. This has been one of the busiest weeks of the school year. On Monday, the Girls and Boys Basketball teams traveled to Orient to take on the Orient-Macksburg Bulldogs. Demon Happenings Welcome back to Demon Happenings! This week men’s basketball team started practice on Monday.  During the first week, the team had practices twice a day. Demon Happenings On Monday, November 8, 2016, there were multiple events taking place at the Lamoni High School.  The first of the things that happened was the beginning of the basketball season.     On Tuesday, November 1, the Lamoni High School students participated in the Iowa Youth Straw Poll put on by the Iowa Secretary of State’s office. You may have seen students wearing their Iowa Youth Straw Poll “I VOTED #IAparticipate” stickers they received once they voted.
