Service Learning Students Fix Rings

The spring semester Service Learning Class just finished fixing the rings in Central Park. Prior to their work, the rings were unsafe because a few of the posts had rotted out at ground level. For the project, students used grant funding from Americorps and Lamoni Parks and Recreation as well as lumber from the city. First, students had to design a brace to support the structure while they worked and come up with a cost estimate for the project. After a plan was approved and material secured, the student had to build the brace and begin disassembling the play equipment. Students pulled the posts and got pretty good at swinging a sledgehammer to bust up concrete. New posts were installed and the holes were filled back in. The students learned a lot from the project and feel proud about doing something to improve the community. Mr. Silver, who teaches the course, is especially thankful for those students who put in the extra effort to make sure the project finished prior to the end of the school year. Great job students and way to show great Demon PRIDE!
