Demon Happening (4/10)

Welcome back to Demon Happenings! This week was a busy week for the students. The Jazz Band traveled to Ames on Tuesday for the Iowa Jazz Championships. Here, the saucy sixteen musicians, under the direction of Lucas Trainor, played with as much emotion and excitement that they could muster. This emotion was carried out best by seniors Omar Alcorta and Junior Jared Grove, who both received outstanding soloist awards for class 1A. The students were glad to see their parents and loved ones who traveled a long distance from home to see them perform. This was also a bittersweet moment for the Seniors as they realized that this would be their final performance at the Iowa Jazz Championship.

The High School boys track team traveled to Afton for their first track meet. Senior Will Greenwood placed first in shot put and fourth in disc. Riley Stevenson placed third in the high jump, and the 4x200 team got second place.

The boys then traveled to Osceola to the Clarke track meet. At his meet, Will Greenwood placed first in shot put again, starting off the season with lots of energy. The 4x400 team, consisting of Riley Stevenson, Conner Seymour, Nicholas Patience, and Patrick Savage, performed spectacularly at this meet.

On Thursday, the girls track team traveled to I-35 for their first track meet. The girls hope to use their experiences at this track meet to and move forward. The competition was intense due to larger schools being at this track meet. Also, with this being the first track meet, the nerves are now gone and the ladies hope to get better moving forward.

Also on last Thursday, the Demon Golf team geared up for their first match of the 2017 season. The Demons were matched up against the Central Decatur Cardinals for a rematch of last year’s sectional finals in which the Demons lost by a heartbreaking two strokes. With the thought of revenge in their minds, the five Varsity golfers took the course. After the nine-hole round concluded, one Demon clearly stood atop of the field. Jordan Lester shot a meet and season best 38, or two over, which earned him a first place medal. The Demons’ also had two other notable performers: Maggie Leonard got third overall for the Lady Demons, and Chase Potter got third overall for the Men’s Team. After all of the scores were tallied, both the Demons and Lady Demons fell short of capturing their first victory of the season.
