Lamoni Community Schools Parent COVID-19 Parent Memo 3/27/2020

March 27, 2020

Lamoni School Community,

Since there has been no change in the Governor Reynold’s recommendation for schools to remain closed through April 10 and after consultation with Lamoni Board Directors, Lamoni Community Schools will remain closed through at least Friday, April 3, 2020.

During this challenging health crisis, we continue to focus on three priorities as a district, including:  Communication, Continuity of Services and Control/Prevention.

Communication

  • We encourage everyone to visit the Lamoni Community Schools  district website for current news, messages and resources to support students and families.

  • Lamoni Schools will continue to use a variety of social media platforms to post information as well, including our Lamoni Facebook page, which is where you will find our breakfast and lunch menus and meal service days and times.

  • A Community Questionnaire has been developed for parents, guardians, families and the community to post questions for the District.  We will use this resource to answer your question directly and develop an “Frequently Asked Questions” document to post for all of our patrons to view in the coming week(s).

  • We will continue to provide a weekly district memo to families so that we stay connected as a community.

Continuity of Services

  • I’d like to recognize and commend the tremendous efforts of Lamoni School Staff who have developed a variety of learning resources for students to access during this closure to support efforts to continue learning at home.  Parents and students can access these Educational Opportunities on our District website or get paper forms at the school during meal service times.

  • Meal service has been an important part of what we have provided families in our community.  Community response has been outstanding with 22-25 children eating breakfast and 50-60 children eating lunch on a daily basis.  We will continue to provide “grab and go” hot meal service on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Wednesday meal options are provided with the Tuesday lunch service and Friday meals are provided with Thursday’s lunch.

Control and Prevention

  • As a District, we will continue to monitor guidance from the Centers for Disease Control, Governor Reynold’s office and the Iowa Department of Education as we make decisions on continued school closure and all planned spring activities, such as spring concerts, spring/summer sports, prom and graduation.  We understand the importance of maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment during this health crisis and the significance of the activities/events in the lives of our students and staff.

  • Students will have many questions about school and the COVID-19 pandemic.  Parents can access a variety of resources to support this conversation, including the Centers for Disease Control Student Conversations Resource page.

I remain confident that we will return, even though we are not sure when.  When that time arrives, we will come together as a community to determine how best to move forward and continue to serve the students we work with on a daily basis.  As Benjamin Franklin once said, “Out of adversity comes opportunity.” I look forward to the opportunities ahead of us as a school community, knowing that together we can.

Superintendent of Schools
