Community Memo 4/3/20

Lamoni School Community,

Yesterday afternoon Governor Reynolds ordered a two week extension to the current school closure, moving the date from April 10 to April 30, which aligns with current Federal guidance.  Please note she has also formally shifted from a recommendation to an order for school closure. The link to the Governor's order follows: Governor's Release 4-2-20

In addition, the Iowa Department of Education provided additional guidance regarding continued learning services for students during this closure.  Lamoni Staff have done a tremendous job in providing resources, activities and lessons for students in these first 15 days, both on our Lamoni Community Schools District website and in a paper packet, to continue to support and engage students.  Our staff will review and begin to respond to the most current guidance next week so we can ensure all students stay connected and continue to develop as learners during the continued closure.

In addition to student learning, Lamoni continues to focus on continuity of all services and will continue to provide a free grab and go meal service for any child 18 years of age and under on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday throughout the closure.  New student learning packets will be distributed during the lunch service on Monday, April 6. Our school food pantry will continue to host regular distributions to families in need as well.

The Governor’s order continues to impact our spring sports and activities as well.  Events and programs associated with the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, the Iowa High School Athletic Association, the Iowa High School Music Association, and the Iowa High School Speech Association. will remain prohibited through April 30.

The IGHSAU and IHSAA are still working to offer spring and summer sports opportunities, provided they can be done safely and follow CDC, State, and local guidelines. The IHSMA and IHSSA are collaborating with member schools to provide up-to-date guidance for teachers and participants through this prohibited period.   IGHSAU/IHSAA Joint Memo

While we work to adhere to CDC guidelines for social distancing, we do not have to be isolated.  Several community agencies continue to provide service and support for families, even if the delivery model is different due to federal guidelines.  I’ve include a link to the Prevent Child Abuse Iowa  website since April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and encourage everyone to help those that might need additional supports through access to other resources such as the Suicide Prevention Center.

A heartfelt thank you to healthcare, first responders and service industry workers, as well as the many individuals who continue to provide critical services on a daily basis.  We will continue to move forward, while being mindful of our community, our state, our nation, and our world, who are all facing uncertain times. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those individuals and families who may be suffering.

Tell your kids, our students, we miss them and to be well.  We all look forward to a return to an even stronger Lamoni Demons Community!

Chris
