School Update

Dear Parent / Guardian;

As we find ourselves in the mix of uncertainty during this time, we want to reassure you that the Lamoni Community School District is working hard to help lighten the load that you as a parent / guardian have now found yourself potentially in.  We have met as various stakeholders in the district to determine how we can help meet the needs of everyone we serve in our district. We would like to share with you several opportunities we are currently and actively engaged in.

Student Access to the School

The school will be offering times for students to come pick up their critical essentials (eye glasses, coat, music instrument, etc.).  We ask that students follow their designated time to come into the building to retrieve their things. If you do not need to come for anything essential we ask that you stay home.  A small amount of staff will be here during that time to assure only ten people enter the building at a time and that only one person per student’s needs enters the building at a time.  All teacher’s classrooms will be locked and students will only be able to access their own personal lockers.

Middle School:  Must enter the West Entrance of the Middle School near the band room.

6th grade: 5:00 PM to 5:30 PM Friday (3-20-20)

7th grade: 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM Friday (3-20-20)

8th grade: 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM Friday (3-20-20)

High School:  Must enter the Main High School Entrance at the front of the building.

9th grade: 5:00 PM to 5:30 PM Friday (3-20-20)

10th grade: 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM Friday (3-20-20)

11th grade: 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM Friday (3-20-20)

12th grade: 6:30 PM to 7:00 PM Friday (3-20-20)

*At this time we are not offering this opportunity to Elementary students as those students take all of their things home with them each week.

**Parents please contact us at lcs@lamonischools.org if your student can not make their designated time slot or if they are an elementary student and need to pick something up.  Staff at the school will do their best to collect what your student needs and make arrangements with you to pick it up.

***If you are sick, DO NOT COME!  We will get you your items at a later date when you are well.

Food Pantry

Our food pantry is still operating and would be able to assist a family’s needs during this time.  Please let us know at lcs@lamonischools.org if your family is in need of this assistance and we will do our best to support.

Educational Opportunities

The State of Iowa has indicated that online learning cannot be mandatory for any of our educational public school systems.  For this reason, the Lamoni Community School District has prepared educational opportunities for our students to utilize during this time period.  An educational opportunities tab has been established on our website for this utilization. Under this tab you will find a building level listed that will take you to a set of resources being compiled for each student’s potential use.  Worksheet packets will also be made available for use in the elementary grade levels. These packets will be available at Grab and Go Breakfast and Lunch at the school starting on Monday, 3-23.

We want to reiterate a couple of aspects of these resources to ensure clarification of intent.

  1. These are educational opportunities ONLY.  Nothing will be made mandatory or graded. These are designed as resources for each individual students use to help potentially move their education along.

  2. Even if it is under the assignments category with a due date and says it is graded on Google Classroom; IT IS NOT mandatory or graded.  This was simply just overlooked by our teachers when it was entered.

  3. NO student is required to do anything during this time; however, we highly encourage each of our students to challenge themselves educationally.  One way to help yourself continue to grow is to READ. Read everything you can get your hands on, because the more you read the better reader you become.

Parents / Guardians, we know that this can be a trying time for you as it is for our entire country, but also what an opportunity to spend time together as a family.  Read books together, play games together, exercise together, have fun together; use this time together. They grow up so fast so let’s make sure that we make this time a positive memory in their lives.  We are a resource for you and we want to help in any way we can.

Please feel free to reach out to us at lcs@lamonischools.org if we can be of assistance, or if you have questions that we can potentially answer.  We are also sending out a questionnaire for you to ask questions that might be of interest or that this letter did not fully address or answer.  We will be compiling those questions and offering out answers as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your patience as we are all trying to wrap our heads around this current situation.  We will continue to keep you updated with as much information that we can share as it becomes available to us.  In the meantime, be safe and stay well.

Sincerely,

Alan R. Dykens, EdD                                                Chris Coffelt,  EdS
