Blue Grass Conference Champions
By: Abby Normal
Congratulations are in order for both the Lamoni Middle School boys’ and girls’ track teams as they both won the Blue Grass Conference Championship. This year’s conference meet took place at Graceland University on May 8 with twelve teams competing. Despite their limited numbers, both Lamoni teams gave it their all and came away on top. Some even set new school records in the process.
The girls finished with an outstanding score of 158 points, which was 59 points better than their nearest competition. Eighth grader Abby Martin set a conference record in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:05.07. This was just one of the four gold medals she earned at the meet. Joining Abby on the winner’s podium were Heiatua Paredes, Cameron Martin, Ashleigh Gerke, Malori Leonard, Reese Potter, Audrey Lloyd, Ashley Parkhurst, and Darian Briell who all had top three finishes. These were not the only athletes to score points, as the entire team contributed to the team’s total score.
The boys won first place by scoring an impressive 139 points, which was 28 points higher than the second place team. Javin Evans, an eighth grader, led the way with 38 points, but was joined on the pedestal by Tyson and Trevor McDole, Kade Nowlin, Paul Eason, Brayden Olson, Jack Greenwood, Matthew Patience, Jesse Niebauer, and Kalvin Brown who all placed in one event or another. Even more members received points for the team and helped them to victory.
Both boys’ and girls’ teams did an excellent job. Our school and community are proud of their accomplishments. We cannot wait to see what their next triumph will be.
