Demon Track Excels at Clarke

On April 4th, the Lamoni High School Boys Track Team competed in the Clarke Relays in Osceola, Iowa. The team came in 2nd place for the Class B section of the track meet with 109 points. Individual wins came from Ambrose Savage in the Discus with a throw of 150ft-08in. Ambrose also won the 400 meter dash with a time of 53.06 seconds. Tate McDole won the 3200 meter run (2mile) with a time of 11:05. Freshman Travis Noel won the Long Jump with a distance of 18ft-09.50 in.  Ambrose Savage is the new school record holder in . . .

Lamoni Middle School and High School participated in our second annual job fair. This involved businesses, colleges, and military branches from our local region talking with students about their organizations and offerings. We appreciate all the organizations that attended as our students continue to learn about what our community offers and possible career paths.

Weight Room Fundraiser

We have some exciting news regarding our school weight room and can use your help! The school applied and received a grant to replace our aging weightlifting equipment. We have already received an initial $20,000. In addition to this if we raise another $20,000 the grant would fund another $20,000 in matching funds that's $60,000 in total. We need to raise $95,000 to fully fund the replacement and bring in equipment like treadmills, rowers, and exercise bikes. The school is a 501C3 so contributions are tax deductible and make . . .

Students Win 3rd Quarter Awards

Every quarter, students are nominated to receive the Demon Award. Students are nominated by a teacher and have to display excellence in selfless service, perseverance, teamwork, and/or other notable qualities. Students receive a certificate and locker magnet. Third quarter's awardees are Ayden Davis, Savannah Kunkle, Kaylee Long, David Piening, Andrew Ramaeker, Kenna Shadden, Emily Stretch, Raiden Tucker, and Kelly Lloyd. Opera Iowa Comes to Lamoni

Yesterday, March 5th, the organization Opera Iowa came to Lamoni Community Schools. They ran a workshop for the elementary and then put on a performance called "Sid the Serpent." During the workshop they introduced the students to opera, explained what it takes to become an opera singer, and showed them some opera techniques. The student thoroughly enjoyed both the workshop and the performance.

Mrs. McKillip's class kicked off Read Across America week on Friday by inviting parents and administrators to come in and read to her class!  It was a great day and the kindergarten and first grade students loved getting to hear different stories from a variety of readers. The class had so much fun! Speech Team Competes at Districts

Ava Courtney, Mason Forsythe, and Nalani Sancruzado performed in the District Individual Speech Contest in Afton, Iowa, on Saturday, February 24, 2024. Mason and Nalani received II ratings in the Solo Musical Theater category. Ava received a II rating in Poetry and a I rating in Expository Address, so she will advance to the state contest at Adel-DeSoto-Minburn High School on Saturday, March 9th. FFA Provides Tractor Tours

This week is National FFA Week and yesterday members from Lamoni’s FFA Chapter provided elementary students with tractor tours. The elementary students enjoyed getting to see the tractors and learning about how they are used. Each day of the week is a different FFA themed day and yesterday was drive your tractor to school day. Student arrived at school with tractors, lawn mowers and ATVs.

CD-Lamoni Esports Qualifies for State

Lamoni Community Schools are happy to announce that the Varsity Rocket League Esports team has qualified for the state tournament! The boys have worked very hard this season and it has paid off. Their match against Newman Catholic yesterday was a sweep with the team winning the first 3 matches! The Lamoni student who is part of the group that qualified for state is JT Stevenson and they are coached by Lamoni teacher Alex Burnette. Demon's Recognized for Excellence

Earlier in the month, Lamoni Middle and High Schools held an assembly to refresh students and staff on what Demon PRIDE stands for. Ambrose Savage, Nick Keddie, and the principal, Mrs. Fairbanks, gave a presentation to reinforce behavior expectations and standards. They did an excellent job of reminding students and staff. Vittles With Valentines

On February 8th, the FACT Committee hosted Valentines with Vittles. Much like Muffins with Mom and other events of this sort, students were able to invite a person who is important to them to eat breakfast with them at the school. As per usual, there were an abundance of attendees and students, visitors, and staff had a great time. Thank you to all the visitors who were willing and able to come in with their student and to the staff who put in the extra time and energy to make this event so special for the students and visitors.

Lamoni FFA Members participated in the Iowa Ag Expo’s – Career Exploration Event that took place at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, IA from January 30th through February 1st. The event was hosted by the Iowa-Nebraska Equipment Dealers Association.   At the event, students had the opportunity to tour the Iowa Ag Expo, network with equipment dealer employees, and participate in a career discussion. GRM Networks Donates $27,000 in Unclaimed Capital Credits to Iowa FFA Chapters

Speech Team Competes

Lamoni students performed in the district large group speech contest on January 20, 2024, at Clarke High School in Osceola, Iowa. Reader's Theater, Improv, and Radio Broadcasting all received division II ratings. A division II rating is an impressive score, but unfortunately, not high enough to continue on to the state contest.  For the most part, this wraps up large group speech for the year, but there is a Speech Showcase on February 5th at 7 PM in the Safe Room of the school. FFA Sow Farrows

    In October of 2023, the FFA’s jointly owned sow was artificially inseminated by the Central Decatur animal science class. She gave birth to 16 piglets on January 13, 2024. Members of the Lamoni Farrowing Team were there by the sow’s side the whole time. The members that helped deliver the piglets were Jaimie Tull, Kimberly Stretch, Brady Lester, and Ethan Elliot. On November 27,2023 the Lamoni FFA Chapter worked shifts at the Lamoni Pizza Hut to raise monetary donations for the Nu Eta Angel Tree. Lamoni FFA members traveled to the High School Craft Championship and Interactive Career Fair on Friday, December 1st at the Varied Industries Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Kindergarten and 1st grade students receive books from SCICF

South Central Iowa Community Foundation (SCICF) recently gifted each Lamoni kindergarten and 1st grade student three books.  Teresa Greenwood, SCICF advisor member, presented the books to the students on November 28, 2023. On November 8th, students of Lamoni Middle School presented information on School of the Wild and Outdoor Day to the Lamoni School Board. Last Friday, Lamoni Community School bus riders conducted a reverse walking bus with the help of RSVP. Preschool Visits Pumpkin Patch

On October 12th, Lamoni Preschool students went to the Pumpkin Patch. It was a rainy day, which meant they got the whole place to themselves. They were able to do things that they would not normally get to do on the field trip, such as the pumpkin cannon and bathtub train. Eventually, it did start to pour, but the students were able to show great Demon PRIDE by keeping up their enthusiasm and having the discipline to follow instructions. The kids had a great time. Middle School Holds School of the Wild

From October 3rd to the 6th, students and staff of the Lamoni Middle School conducted School of the Wild and Outdoor Day at Slips Bluff County Park. School of the Wild is an annual event that the University of Iowa started in Iowa City, but has since spread to many communities in the state. Healthiest State Initiative

On October 4th, Lamoni Community Schools took part in Iowa's Healthiest State Initiative by walking for 15-30 minutes in the afternoon. This initiative is designed to foster activity in students to promote physical health. From Kindergarten all the way up to Seniors, the entire school system took part, except the middle school, who was out traipsing around Slips Bluff County Park all week. Great job students and staff. On Wednesday September 25, 2023, seven members of the Lamoni FFA Chapter went to Knoxville, Iowa to attend the South Central District Soils Career Development Event (CDE). Four students from Lamoni Community Schools attended the Women in Agriculture Conference held at Mt. Ayr High School. The purpose of the conference was to showcase and promote agricultural careers by providing opportunities for students the chance to interact with business professionals. On May 10th the High School Physics Class went to St. Louis to see the Gateway Arch and Neil deGrasse Tyson in person at the Touhill Performing Arts Center for his “An Astrophysicist Goes to the Movies, The Sequel”. On Friday, May 5, 2023, the Lamoni Middle School FFA went to Shatto Dairy Farm in Cameron, Missouri. The students who participated in the trip were Macie Jeanes, Allyson Martin, Ethan Elliott, Travis Noel, Naliyah Nary, Kacen McKillip, and Josie Hill.  After arriving at the dairy farm, the group sampled all of the different flavors of milk. LHS had its first official Decision Day 2023! Seniors gathered in the Safe Room to share with one another what their plans are after graduation. Last week, many of our students attended the "Build my Future" event held at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The event encompasses many of the career and technical education (CTE) areas. These areas include, but are not limited to, electric, HVAC, building trades, police, fire, military, and food service. This year's seniors, Kalvin, Eli, Tyson, Christian, and Cannon, all of which have played for at least two years, have put lots of hard work into their basketball careers. Kalvin, Eli, and Tyson have played Demon basketball for all 4 years of their high school career. Pre-School Learns About Turkeys

Kayla Clausen, Director of Decatur County Conservation, visited the preschool today to teach students about turkeys.  They learned the differences between male and female turkeys, wild and farm raised turkeys, and got to see a turkey tail and feel turkey feathers, a beard, and a spur.   Kayla is a wonderful resource to our community.  The preschoolers are always excited for her to come!

Lamoni Elementary’s 2nd and 3rd grade classes participated in the Great Cookie Election on November 8th. Students had to choose a cookie to campaign for, the options were "Oreo" or "Chips Ahoy". We came up with pros and cons of each cookie, and they carefully decided which one they were going to make a campaign poster for. Students Help Set Up Chromebooks

Last week, high school students ranging from Freshman to Seniors help Mr. Patience set up new Chromebooks for the district. They helped processing in two states to prepare 220 new Chromebooks. There is still a chunk of work left to do, but because of their efforts, new students, second grade, and those with failing Chromebooks are able to get new machines. Each year the South Central district and Iowa FFA officers plan and facilitate Greenhand Fire Up Conferences for FFA members in the South Central district. The FFA Enrichment Center and staff welcomed FFA chapters from all over the South Central district on October 18th. Leep Preschool has been learning about fire safety. We were able to take  a trip to the Lamoni fire station.  Firefighters Curt Shields, Peter Vogel, and Anthony Cray taught us more about fire safety.  We talked about making a plan with our parents for a safe spot to go once away from the fire, and we learned about what the trucks, tools, and gear are for.   We got to spray the hose, ride on the truck, and put on the gear.   We also traveled all the way to Cumming, Iowa, to visit . . .

In recognition of 9/11 Day of Service, AmeriCorps Seniors and AmeriCorps Youth Launch partnered with Lamoni Middle School students for a clean-up project at Central Park. Demon volleyball practice has begun. The high school team currently has 10 players. Their first scrimmage is August 16th at SE Warren. Two-a-days started on Monday and run thru Thursday next week. 6th Grade Attends JA BizTown

This year the 6th grade students at Lamoni Middle School participated in a Junior Achievement program called JA BizTown.  This is a  multi-curricular unit that teaches skills in community and economics, financial literacy, business management, and job skills.  The students work on preparation for several weeks.  On May 12 they traveled to Des Moines to work with students from Martensdale-St. Mary's school within several businesses at BizTown, which is a simulation city.  Everyone had a wonderful time . . .

6th Grade Meets Their Penpals

This year the Lamoni Middle School 6th grade students had RSVP penpals.  We exchanged letters several times throughout the year and very much enjoyed doing this. On Tuesday, May 24, the 6th graders and their adult penpals got together in the Commons area and had an end-of-year celebration.  Everyone had a great time getting to know each other better, and we enjoyed donuts, juice, and playing games and visiting together. The spring semester Service Learning Class just finished fixing the rings in Central Park. Prior to their work, the rings were unsafe because a few of the posts had rotted out at ground level. For the project, students used grant funding from Americorps and Lamoni Parks and Recreation as well as lumber from the city. On Tuesday, the Lamoni FFA Chapter held their annual BBQ and petting zoo. Lamoni Seniors Compete in their Last Demon Relays

Last night Lamoni competed in the Demon Relays. The boys took home 1st place with 160 points. Many of the athletes, both girls and boys, accomplished new personal records. All in all, the kids did a great job and represented the school and themselves very well. It was also senior night for Lamoni. This is the last year that Malori, Jack, Matthew, Odin, Brayden, and Javin will compete in high school track. Last night, both the Boys and Girls Track and Field Teams competed in the Bluegrass Conference Meet and won. The Lamoni girls took first in the Bluegrass Conference meet scoring 105 points.  The top four scoring teams were rounded out by Murray (103), Seymour (100) and Mormon Trail (96). Cameron Wins Governor Scholar Award

Each year, Governor Kim Reynolds and title sponsor Iowa Farm Bureau honor one or two top academic achieving seniors from each school in the state of Iowa. On May 1st, Governor Reynolds honored Cameron Martin with the award. There were 419 students who were honored with the prestigious award this year. 4th Grade completed their economics unit by holding a Marketplace. Students practiced being producers by creating products at home that they had to make out of a type of paper. At school, the students wrote commercial scripts, product descriptions, and set their prices based on the amount of interest in their product. Congratulations Michael!

Congratulations to Michael Millslagle (LHS class of 2020) on wining the high jump event at the Heart of American NAIA indoor track meet held in Maryville, MO on 2/19/22.  Michael represented Graceland University with a winning jump of 7ft 1/2 inch making him a two time HAAC Conference Champion and now 2nd in the nation in the high jump event.  His weekend jump also placed him 134th in the world in the high jump event.  Lamoni Community School is very proud to say that Michael is one of ours!  If you see this . . .

On January 17th, Mrs. Roberts came into Mr. Silver's 6th and 9th grade classes for Martin Luther King Day. MLK Day is designated as a national day of service and as such, Mrs. Roberts, through Americorps, came in and taught about the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The students were also asked to fill out a sheet detailing a community project they would like to do or see completed. Mrs. Carpenter's 7th grade science class is currently studying magnetic and electrical forces. During the course of their studies, they created projects that displayed magnetic force, electrical force, or both together. The Lamoni large group speech team performed at district contest on January 22nd at Clarke High School. Both Reader's Theater and Group Improv received I (excellent) ratings. January 20 was an exciting day for Lamoni Elementary students who got to meet a real Iowa author!!! Coach Sloth came to the library and told us about how exciting it is to write books.  There were lots of ooohs and aaahs as Coach performed a magic trick using his newest book “Coach Sloth’s Magic Coloring book. Congratulations to the girls' JV and varsity basketball teams as both defeated North Harrison last night. The JV team won 18-6 in two quarters of play and the varsity won 53-31. Reese Potter led the team in scoring with 22 points followed by Taylor Henson with 15. Reese also led in rebounds with 14 followed by Cameron Martin who had 8. The Demons are currently 12-2. They and the boys' team both play tonight at Moulton-Udell with the girls' game starting at 6:00 PM and the boys' starting at 7:30 PM. Go Demons!

Pre-School Catapults

Last week, Ms. Shyra’s preschool class worked together make catapults.  After talking about forces and properties of matter, we built a catapult as a large group, and tried to catapult many objects with different properties.  Then we broke into small groups and used magnatiles and rulers to make catapults for cotton balls.   The students were excited to do this, and asked for materials to be left out for them to use again during free play time.

Last Monday and Tuesday Mrs. Burke's 4th grade class studied chain reactions. They started by looking at cause and effect with simple one-step reactions. They increased the steps until they watched and understood Rube Goldberg Machines. They were then tasked with creating a minimum two-step reaction to accomplish a task. Today Mrs. Martin's preschool class decorated cookies with Mr. Hampton's foods class. The high school students baked the cookies prior and then helped the preschoolers decorate them.      Our fourth grade class learned about murals and different kinds of art. On December 2, 2021, we went on a mural walk to see art murals on main street.  First we went downtown and saw our first mural.  It was made in 1990 by Lamoni High School and Middle School students. On Monday, November 22, Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg and the CEO of the Food Bank of Iowa, Michelle Book, visited our school to see our food pantry and find out more about its operation.  The Food Bank of Iowa donates the food we receive in our pantry, and they have also provided a brand new freezer this year through grant funding.  Both Gregg and Book were very impressed with our operation as well as the number of families we have been able to serve so far this year.  We are all very thankful for our food . . .

As the first quarter came to a close, Mr. Silver's freshman Service Learning Class was able to finish rebuilding the two shelter benches in Central Park. Students in the class identified their rebuilding as a need for the community and were tasked with finding out a way to make that happen. Pumpkin Book Reports

In the last two weeks the 1st graders brought pumpkins into Mrs. McKillip's classroom for an assignment. The students were tasked with picking one of their favorite books, reading it, and then writing a report on it to share with their peers. They also decorated a pumpkin to resemble one of the characters from their book. As a result Mrs. McKillip's classroom is adorned with some wonderfully creative pumpkins. Great job 1st Grade! Alumni vs Players Flag Football Game

This Friday since the Homecoming Game has been cancelled, the High School Student Council decided to throw an Alumni vs. Players flag football game. All alumni football players are invited to participate and alumni cheerleaders are invited to cheer for the teams if they would like. The game will have four ten minute quarters with a ten minute halftime during which the queen will be crowned. The game starts at 7:00 PM at Graceland University and all community members are welcome to attend. Go Demons!

In an effort to support good hygiene and limit the spread of COVID, the Mount Ayr Medical Clinic and Ringgold County Hospital are donating more than 180 cases of hand sanitizer to area schools. Congratulations to the High School and Middle School Volleyball Teams on their wins last night. Both teams beat Diagonal and the varsity squad is currently ranked 14th in the state. Last night the Lamoni Cross Country Team ran at the Leon C.C. Meet. The boys did well with two of them beating their previos times and one running for the first time. Demons Win the Clarke Kickoff Classic

The Lamoni Demons won the Clarke Kickoff Classic volleyball tournament last Saturday. In pool play they beat Chariton in three, Saydel in two, and  Martensdale-St. Marys in two. In the final two games to determine the winner, they beat East Union in two and Chariton in two for the championship.      Lamoni Community Schools will light up the baseball and softball fields Friday, May 1st starting at 8 pm. Lamoni 6 th graders recently had a bake sale to raise money for Toys for Tots.  We sold baked goods at Middle School Fun Night and again on December 16 during the middle school basketball games.  We had a great day of shopping at Dollar General for toys to be donated to Decatur County Toys for Tots.  Thank you to everyone who supported our efforts through baking, buying, donating, and helping!

To start the week off, the Demon Golf teams traveled to Humeston for a triangular meet against the Mormon Trail Saints and the Wayne Falcons.     This week, the middle school art students made posters to show how drugs can negatively affect your life or how living being drug free makes life great.     Welcome back to the Demon Happenings! Starting off the week we were notified that it was FFA Week! We had different dress up days all throughout the week: Tuesday was FFA Official Dress day, Wednesday was camo day, Thursday was hat day, and lastly Friday was flannel Friday. Then, finishing off FFA week, we had an assembly on Friday. At the assembly there was game and a teacher kissed a pig! Welcome back to Demon Happenings! After a busy week here at LHS there is a lot to catch up. To start the week off, on Tuesday the Varsity Academic Team traveled to Southeast Warren High School for a regional competition against thirteen other schools.      Chad Elliott, international award winning songwriter and author, will be at Lamoni Community Schools on February 27 presenting workshops for all students. Welcome back! We hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. The Wellness Committee is promoting a Healthy Wall of Fame. The Lamoni Community Schools nominated Gayle Ramaeker the healthiest teacher. The Lamoni Bowling squad traveled to Osceola, Iowa, on Monday to take on several surrounding teams.  The Demons didn't fare well against the competition but scored a team score of 1832, which is about 200 pins above their average.  Even though the team didn’t fare well in scoring, they feel that they are making improvements.   On Tuesday, the bowling team traveled to Red Oak in another multi-team match.  The Demons were short-staffed and could not compete as a team but they had two individuals compete. . . .

    Welcome back! We hope the students had a fun filled and/or relaxing winter break! Classes resumed on Tuesday, January 3 rd , and you could tell which students were not prepared for the “early” mornings that the new semester brings.     The Demon basketball teams started the new semester with a basketball game on Tuesday. Dan Boswell Retires After 21 Years

    At 7:45 a.m. on December 22, 2016 the keys were passed on from Dan Boswell to Bob Kelly, the new Lamoni Community School District Maintenance and Grounds Supervisor. At around 2:30 p.m., with his hours in for the week, Dan quietly clocked out for the last time, discreetly leaving on his last day before retirement. Welcome back to another exciting week in the Lamoni High School. This has been one of the busiest weeks of the school year. On Monday, the Girls and Boys Basketball teams traveled to Orient to take on the Orient-Macksburg Bulldogs. Demon Happenings Welcome back to Demon Happenings! This week men’s basketball team started practice on Monday.  During the first week, the team had practices twice a day. Demon Happenings On Monday, November 8, 2016, there were multiple events taking place at the Lamoni High School.  The first of the things that happened was the beginning of the basketball season. LHS Students Participate in Iowa Youth Straw Poll

    On Tuesday, November 1, the Lamoni High School students participated in the Iowa Youth Straw Poll put on by the Iowa Secretary of State’s office. You may have seen students wearing their Iowa Youth Straw Poll “I VOTED #IAparticipate” stickers they received once they voted.
